The Romanian Mountains
The mountain scenery in Romania is highly impressive. From smaller hills to rocky mountains you can find hiking tracks for any level and taste. The Carpatians are "the most sinuous mountains in Europe" ("The Rough Guide to Romania") and they offer a hugely varied and beautiful landscape with views that stretch for miles and miles. In addition Romania has some of the most massive forests on the continent, being "the last place in Europe, apart from Russia, where many large carnivores - bears, wolves and lynxes - can be found" (BBC News - Saturday, 3 July, 2004, 08:37 GMT).
The Carpathian Mountains form aproximatively
31% of Romania (up to 2543m) with a further 36% hills (400-700m) and 33% planes.
Most of the mountains have clearly marked paths and many refuges on the way. Some parts are innaccessible or dangerous during the winter.
