Romanian Sport

As in many other countries in Europe, the most popular sport in Romania is football. The first football competition took place in the winter of 1909. Over the years, Romanian teams had their share of succsses, culminating in the winning of the European Champions Cup (now Champions League) by Steaua Bucharest. At national tem level, the best performance was in 1994 at the world cup when Romania played the match of the tournament eliminating Argentina. They subsequently went out at the quarter final stage after penalties against Sweden. Some of the best known Romanian football players at the moment are Adrian Mutu of Chelsea and Cristian Chivu of AS Roma.

Other famous Romanian sportsmen include: Nadia Comaneci (the first gymnast ever to score a perfect 10 mark at the 1976 Olympics - she actually managed 7 perfect 10s, 3 gold medals, one silver and one bronze during the same competition), Ilie Nastase - the eccentric tennins champion of the 70s, Gabriela Szabo - the athlet, etc.

The Romanian Olympic team manged a 11-th place in the overall nations ranking at the Sydney 200 Olympics with 11 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals and a 14-th place at the Athens 2004 Olympics with 8 gold, 5 silver and 6 bronze medals.
